HIGH SCHOOL RETREAT A HIT!

Skiing, snowboarding, shopping, hot tubbing, ice hockey, tubing, foosball, Smash Bros., pool, card games, conversations, worship, and learning about Jesus were all highlights from last weekend’s High School Winter Retreat.

The group enjoyed a weekend at Timberline Lodge near Winter Park and the experience did not disappoint. “I can’t even begin to describe how amazing the retreat this weekend was and the joy everyone who went brought me,” Julea explained. “Thanks for bringing me so much unending joy.”

Zoe reflected, “On Friday when I got here, I was just hoping this weekend wasn’t going to be terrible. Now I can say it was one of the best retreats I’ve been on!”

Our next high school trip will be July 10-16 in Los Angeles. Visit myse.cc/hscamp for more info.

STORY OF THE WEEK

STUDENTS SERVE AT COFFEE SHOP

The Coffee Shop is busy every weekend but not just with customers. Since the launch of Starting Point for Students last June, dozens of teenagers have been working behind the counter to help make the Coffee Shop go.

Cathy Clarke runs the Coffee Shop and she has seen a benefit in getting teens involved. “We have middle school students and high school students serving at every service and they are some of my best workers,” Clarke explains. “They bring good energy and get a lot of things done.”

Students older than sixteen are eligible to learn how to work the front counter and make drinks, while students younger than sixteen can stock the product and also assist in the bookstore. It’s good work and helpful to the full-time staff. Any student interested in serving in a ministry is invited to meet with a youth pastor at Starting Point during any of the Weekend Services.

STORY OF THE WEEK

HIGH SCHOOL WORK CREW AT SNOWBOUND IS A HIT

When it came to Work Crew for Snowbound, Lexi wasn’t quite sure what she was getting into but she knew she was meeting a need.

She joined 40 other high schoolers to work the Dining Room for the Middle School Winter Retreat in January. “Ben said high school students could go on the trip for free and I was excited to help,” Lexi explained. “Doing the meal prep and cleanup for the weekend was a lot of work but it was also a lot of fun. I met many new friends.”

Every year high school students have the opportunity to serve on Snowbound Work Crew. Ben Patterson hopes City high schoolers will begin to look forward to this opportunity. “One of the best way to strengthen relationships or meet new people is to do projects together. Snowbound Work Crew is a great way to spend a weekend.”

STORY OF THE WEEK

FUN ALL AROUND AT SNOWBOUND

Middle school students hit the road last weekend for Winter Retreat at Snowbound. It was a time of fun, singing, learning from God’s Word, time with friends, and late bedtimes (of course).

The camp was held at Frontier Ranch in Buena Vista. We joined 400 other middle school students from around the Denver metro area for the experience. The theme this year was Follow Me and Chad Poe, our speaker, challenged us to live in a way that our lives reflect Jesus. Haleigh commented, “This weekend was one of the best weekends of my life. Bonding with other churches and worshiping with other churches was so much fun.”

STORY OF THE WEEK

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SERVE REFUGEES
Trips and getaways are grand but, when it comes to missions and outreach, our goal is to love where we live. Right here, in our communities, is where it all begins!

In December, a team of our High School students went to Denver to serve a community of refugees from Burma, Nepal, and Somalia. The students set up a Christmas party for about 300 refugees and spent time playing with kids, doing art projects, and handing out clothing. It was an exciting time and our partners, Restoration Outreach, commented on how thrilled they were to see young people getting involved and helping others.

Are you interested in being a part of the next outreach event in Denver? Any high school student or adult is invited, please contact Johanna Spille by email at johanna.spille@southeastcc.org.

STORY OF THE WEEK

SPECIAL SERVICE BEING PLANNED FOR HOLY WEEK
The week leading up to Easter seems far off but it’s only a handful of weeks away. Known as Holy Week, it is a time when Christians focus on Jesus’ journey to the Cross. Maundy Thursday is remembrance of Jesus’ commanded the disciples to, “Love one another as I have loved you.”

Southeast is partnering with nine other organizations to put on a service for Maundy Thursday and planning is underway. The service will feature five high school seniors speaking on Jesus’ words at the Last Supper. “It’s a service for the whole community,” the planning team explained. “It is a great opportunity to invite friends and family.”

Partnering organizations are Calvary Chapel, Campus Life, Crossroads, Eastern Hills, Greenwood, Mission Hills, PEPC, Parker United Methodist, and Summit.

ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO PARTNER WITH US

Hey Parents!  Youth Group could use your help!

We'd like to offer more opportunities for our kids to connect with each other outside of regular church time, but we need adult volunteers to make it happen. Our biggest need right now is in planning events for small groups. We could also use help with larger events, outings, and retreats.

Ideally each small group would have a parent to plan and organize events. Events are an important part of helping kids feel like they belong, they can also be a great vehicle for outreach and service. Planning events is a great way to serve with limited time and without being a small group leader.

If every parent volunteered at least once we would have enough help for the entire year!  Please contact Erica Swanson at erica.m.swanson@gmail.com to learn more.

STORY OF THE WEEK

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: CHRISTI SURINA
I began leading because my own kids were teenagers and I wanted to walk the high school years with them. What I quickly discovered was how much more God had for me. In the past 5 years, God has given me the opportunity to build deep and significant relationships with teenagers. I have had girls in my living room sharing stories of indescribable pain and hurt. I have had girls at my kitchen table celebrating holidays with our family when their own homes weren't safe places. I have had girls in my prayers as I cried out to God on their behalf. I began my serving journey thinking it would be a great way to build a relationship with my children (which it has), but in turn, God has stirred in me a passion and given me the gift of a front row seat to changed lives.
