STORY OF THE WEEK

STUDENTS ATTEND SHIFT CONFERENCE

Hundreds of students rallied together at Valor Christian High School last Saturday to tackle the world of human trafficking.

This student-organized conference brought provided seven speakers to talk about the issues. Topics of discussion in large group and breakout sessions included how to spot warning signs, the effects of pornography, and empowering to prevent.

“The Shift Conference opened my eyes and made me realize that human trafficking is actually happening in our area. I learned that I could be a part of the shift in the culture,” Jacob Spille said.

You may ask, how can I (only one person) make a difference? Well one thing that we certainly know to be true is that for anything to happen, in order for change to be real, there must be a SHIFT in our minds and in our hearts. We also know that for change to become real there really needs to be a SHIFT in our Personal Actions. For more info visit shiftjustice.com.

STORY OF THE WEEK

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: DIANE CHRISTENSEN

Diane is a marvelous middle school small group leader and has served in Student Ministry since 2003! We caught up with Diane for a little Q&A to learn what keeps her alive for middle schoolers:

Why did you choose to serve?
It is a natural choice for me to help out with kids since I have 4 children of my own, not to mention how much I enjoy it and I know I am called to do so.

What do you like about your role as a small group leader?
I enjoy relating to the students and providing guidance as I can. These students need to know how much they are loved and just need someone to listen to them without judgment.

Anything else on your mind you’d like to share?
With so much negativity the students have to face day to day, they need a good support system that makes them realize their worth is so much more than what this world says. They need a team of people praying over them and guiding them by speaking love and truth into their lives. I truly want every student to know how important they are - that is why I volunteer. Plus God asked me to.

STORY OF THE WEEK

HIGH SCHOOL RETREAT A HIT!

Skiing, snowboarding, shopping, hot tubbing, ice hockey, tubing, foosball, Smash Bros., pool, card games, conversations, worship, and learning about Jesus were all highlights from last weekend’s High School Winter Retreat.

The group enjoyed a weekend at Timberline Lodge near Winter Park and the experience did not disappoint. “I can’t even begin to describe how amazing the retreat this weekend was and the joy everyone who went brought me,” Julea explained. “Thanks for bringing me so much unending joy.”

Zoe reflected, “On Friday when I got here, I was just hoping this weekend wasn’t going to be terrible. Now I can say it was one of the best retreats I’ve been on!”

Our next high school trip will be July 10-16 in Los Angeles. Visit myse.cc/hscamp for more info.

STORY OF THE WEEK

STUDENTS SERVE AT COFFEE SHOP

The Coffee Shop is busy every weekend but not just with customers. Since the launch of Starting Point for Students last June, dozens of teenagers have been working behind the counter to help make the Coffee Shop go.

Cathy Clarke runs the Coffee Shop and she has seen a benefit in getting teens involved. “We have middle school students and high school students serving at every service and they are some of my best workers,” Clarke explains. “They bring good energy and get a lot of things done.”

Students older than sixteen are eligible to learn how to work the front counter and make drinks, while students younger than sixteen can stock the product and also assist in the bookstore. It’s good work and helpful to the full-time staff. Any student interested in serving in a ministry is invited to meet with a youth pastor at Starting Point during any of the Weekend Services.

STORY OF THE WEEK

HIGH SCHOOL WORK CREW AT SNOWBOUND IS A HIT

When it came to Work Crew for Snowbound, Lexi wasn’t quite sure what she was getting into but she knew she was meeting a need.

She joined 40 other high schoolers to work the Dining Room for the Middle School Winter Retreat in January. “Ben said high school students could go on the trip for free and I was excited to help,” Lexi explained. “Doing the meal prep and cleanup for the weekend was a lot of work but it was also a lot of fun. I met many new friends.”

Every year high school students have the opportunity to serve on Snowbound Work Crew. Ben Patterson hopes City high schoolers will begin to look forward to this opportunity. “One of the best way to strengthen relationships or meet new people is to do projects together. Snowbound Work Crew is a great way to spend a weekend.”

STORY OF THE WEEK

FUN ALL AROUND AT SNOWBOUND

Middle school students hit the road last weekend for Winter Retreat at Snowbound. It was a time of fun, singing, learning from God’s Word, time with friends, and late bedtimes (of course).

The camp was held at Frontier Ranch in Buena Vista. We joined 400 other middle school students from around the Denver metro area for the experience. The theme this year was Follow Me and Chad Poe, our speaker, challenged us to live in a way that our lives reflect Jesus. Haleigh commented, “This weekend was one of the best weekends of my life. Bonding with other churches and worshiping with other churches was so much fun.”
