Easter at Southeast

Things Phil Said:

Everyone is religious! Religious means: to treat or regard with devotion, to have a deep enduring commitment to, and to treat with reverence.

Reason everyone is religious

  • We were created to worship
  • We were designed to seek beyond ourselves

Sometimes it feels weird to be around people who are "religious" in a way that is different than you.  Someone who is religious about fitness may have their own vocabulary and activities and familiarity with places that another person doesn't have.

Truth is we can all feel uncomfortable when we are around new situations, people and thoughts. Keep that in mind when we see how different people react to the idea and reality of the resurrection

Most of the people around Jesus gave their lives as martyrs because once the truth soaked in they were transformed.  No longer unbelieving, skeptical, afraid.

The resurrection is pivotal to everything but people respond differently and have a different processes.

Open It:

What was a good or fun Easter memory for you? Do you now have any traditions related to Easter?

When you first encountered church, was there anything that seemed strange to you?

Explore It:

Let's look at the Scriptures first to see how others responded to the both the idea and the reality of the resurrection. Read Acts 17:22-34

  • What is happening?
  • Who is Paul talking to?
  • How does Paul relate to these people of Athens?
  • What is his message
  • How do the people respond?

Read Luke 24: 1-12

  • What happened?
  • Who was there?
  • What was the same/different in their responses to Jesus being alive?

In Luke 24 :13-24  Two disciples are walking and talking about what just happened with Jesus. They are still trying to figure it all out. Jesus is there and starts walking with them but they don't realize it.  He asks them questions and then He responds to them.

Read Luke 24:25-27

  • What does Jesus say?
  • What does Jesus do?

Luke 24:31-34  They finally get it and go tell others

Read Luke 24:36-41    He appears to others. How do they respond?

Luke 24: 46-48

  • What does Jesus do?
  • What does Jesus say?

Get It:

The reality of the resurrection changed these unbelieving and some slow and foolish disciples into a courageous and committed group of people who individually, many of them made the choice to tell the story when it cost them their lives. They took the message to people everywhere.

  • So what changed?
  • What were they committed and devoted to?

  • Something new and unfamiliar to some.
  • Powerful and transformational
  • Reveals the truth about who Jesus is

For some there is a quicker realization of the truth, for others there is a process.  Jesus met them where they were and provided teaching or scars or whatever they needed to "get it".

Where are you on the journey?

  • Are these things new or unfamiliar?
  • Lean in.
  • Take a step.
  • Ask a question.
  • Run and see like Peter
  • Slower and more unbelieving like the 2 on the road.

Apply It:

Wherever you are, will you ask Jesus to show Himself and the truth about Him to you?

What do you need to do this week to take the next step in your journey with Jesus?

Remember - A lot can change in 3 days! ( Easter story )
